Organizing Tips for a Tidy Home with Pets

As a professional organizer and proud pet owner, I know firsthand how our furry friends can bring immense joy and a bit of chaos into our homes. Meet Lily, my lovable Golden Doodle. At 75 pounds, she’s a big girl with an even bigger personality. Lily’s presence means making room for her large toys, ample food supply, and everything else that comes with having a pet. Today, I want to share some practical tips and strategies for organizing your home in a way that accommodates your pets and keeps everything tidy and functional.

Understanding Your Pet’s Organizing Needs

First things first, understanding your pet's specific needs is crucial. Every pet is different, and their size, habits, and preferences can significantly influence how you organize your space.

For example, Lily’s size means we need a designated area for her food and water bowls to avoid any spills or mess. Smaller pets might not need as much space, but they could have different requirements, like a cozy nook for their bed or a specific spot for their litter box. Tailoring your organization strategies to your pet's unique needs will make a big difference.

Creating a Designated Pet Zone

One of the best ways to keep your home organized is to create a designated pet zone. This is an area where you can store all your pet’s essentials, from food and toys to grooming supplies and leashes. Having a specific spot for everything will help you keep track of your pet’s belongings and make your home look more organized.

For Lily, we have a spot in our pantry where her food and water bowls are always placed. Nearby, we have a few shelves dedicated to her food storage, treats, supplements, and feeding-related items like bowls and travel containers. This setup not only keeps everything within reach but also makes it easy to clean up any spills immediately.

Storing Pet Food and Treats

Pet food storage is a critical aspect of keeping your home organized. I recommend using airtight containers to keep food fresh and prevent any pests. Clear containers are a great choice because they allow you to see when you’re running low and need to restock.

In Lily’s case, her food comes in large bags that can be cumbersome to store. We transfer her food into a large, airtight container with a wide opening, making it easy to scoop out meals and refill as needed. For treats, we use smaller, labeled jars that are kept on a high shelf to avoid any accidental overfeeding.

Managing Toys and Accessories

If your pet is anything like Lily, toys can quickly take over your living space. To keep this under control, consider using storage bins or baskets. Label these containers to make it easy to find specific toys and rotate them regularly to keep your pet engaged.

For Lily, we have a large wicker basket in the living room where we store her toys. This basket blends well with our decor and keeps her toys easily accessible. Additionally, we have a smaller bin for outdoor toys, like her frisbees and balls, which we keep by the back door.

Organizing Grooming Supplies

Grooming supplies can quickly become scattered if not properly organized. Use a small caddy or drawer to keep brushes, nail clippers, shampoos, and other grooming essentials together. This way, when it’s time for a grooming session, everything is in one place.

We keep Lily’s grooming supplies in a clear storage bin in a kitchen cabinet, next to her vitamins and monthly preventatives. This makes it easy to grab and take to whichever room we decide to groom her in, minimizing the mess and stress.

Setting Up a Pet-Friendly Entryway

Your entryway can quickly become cluttered with leashes, collars, and outdoor gear. Creating a pet-friendly entryway can help manage this. Install hooks or a small shelf near the door to hang leashes and store other walking essentials.

In our home, we have a hook by the back door specifically for Lily’s leashes.. On the counter next to it, we keep a small bin for her waste bags, next to hand sanitizer. We also have a small basket for her outdoor toys. This setup keeps everything we need for walks or backyard play in one convenient spot.

Maintaining Cleanliness

Pets can be messy, so maintaining cleanliness is key to keeping your home organized. Regularly vacuuming and cleaning your pet’s designated areas will help manage fur and dander. Investing in a good pet-friendly vacuum can make this task much easier.

We vacuum Lily’s favorite spots every few days and wash her bedding weekly. This not only keeps our home clean but also ensures that she has a fresh, comfortable place to rest.

Handling Pet Beds and Blankets

Pet beds and blankets can be bulky and take up a lot of space. Consider using stackable storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags to store extra blankets and seasonal bedding. This will help you keep these items organized and out of the way when not in use.

Lily has a few favorite blankets that we rotate. We store the extras in a dedicated bin in our linen closet.

Creating a Pet Command Center

Finally, creating a pet command center can be incredibly helpful. This is a dedicated space where you keep all important pet-related information, like vet records, medication schedules, and contact details for pet sitters or groomers. Use a bulletin board or a binder to keep everything organized and easily accessible.

Our pet command center is a small section of our home office. We have a binder with all of Lily’s important documents and a calendar to track her vet appointments and medication schedule. This setup ensures we never miss an important date and can quickly access any information we need.

Final Thoughts: Organizing for your Fur Baby Doesn’t Have to be a Daunting Task!

With a little planning and some practical strategies, you can create a home that is both pet-friendly and well-organized. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you and your pet. By setting up designated areas, using appropriate storage solutions, and maintaining regular cleaning routines, you can enjoy a harmonious living space where both you and your furry friend can thrive.

So, here’s to a more organized home for you and your pets!
